Nawal is a world renowned writer – her books (translated into over thirty languages) on the situation of women have had a deep effect on successive generations of young women and men over the last five decades.

Since she witnessed the damage that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) could cause during her work as a doctor she began a campaign (which would last fifty years) against the practice.

She has been imprisoned, received death threats and faced political exile throughout her campaign. In May 2008 she won the case which banned FGM in Egypt.
