back to Awards & NomineesThe Inspiration Awards - Lucy Rivers Bulkeley
Lucy became the first European woman ever to complete Racing the Planet's ‘4 Desert Grand Slam Challenge’, running across the Gobi, Atacama, Sahara and Antarctica deserts in one calendar year. The Challenge is a series of seven-day, 250 kilometres (155 miles) self-supported races across the largest and most forbidding deserts on Earth.
The competitors must carry all their own equipment, food, clothes and medical supplies. They are only provided with rationed water and a place in a tent at night. Lucy wanted to undertake a challenge in memory of her father who lost his life to cancer in 2007. To date Lucy has raised over £35,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, with another 250km challenge in Nepal planned for November. One in three people in their lives will be affected by cancer one way or another.
Lucy completed the Atacama Crossing, Chile on the 13th March, the Gobi March, China on 3rd July, the Sahara Race, Egypt on 9th October and The Antarctica on 23rd November 2010.
