In 1945 Helen volunteered to go into the former concentration camp of Belsen to help with the physical and psychological recovery of Holocaust survivors; she was 19 years old. Helen was told some of the worst human horror stories imaginable and from that moment she began a tireless campaign in the human rights field.

In 2005 she formed the Helen Bamber Foundation, to help rebuild the lives of survivors of gross human rights violations. For over 60 years Helen has provided treatment and counselling for over 50,000 people.
